Work Ready  Program

Chop’s Work Ready Program, offered year-round in eight-week sections that blend classroom instruction with hands-on work experience, has been a cornerstone of our programming since its inception in 2012.

Through a combination of guided activities, role modeling, and personalized feedback, participants develop essential interpersonal, professional, and financial literacy skills crucial for employment success. Our curriculum includes modules on effective communication, time management, multitasking, and proper food handling, among others.

Participants receive individualized support in crafting professional resumes and cover letters, as well as engaging in mock interviews with local employers to enhance their job-seeking skills. The work experience component offers valuable exposure to the retail sector, particularly within Chop’s Café, where teens gain practical knowledge using Point-of-Sale systems and commercial kitchen equipment.

Upon completion of the program, participants receive a professional portfolio comprised of a cover letter, resume, letter of recommendation, and a Work-Ready Certificate highlighting their acquired competencies. Additionally, they earn a Food-Handling Certificate and a $200 completion award, facilitating the application of financial literacy skills learned during the course.

Post-program, we actively assist participants in securing and retaining employment within the community. Leveraging partnerships with local businesses that hire teens such as Chick-fil-A and Schulz Warm Puppy Café, we at times are able to help facilitate job placements tailored to the interests of our graduates. Furthermore, our collaboration with the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber provides unique opportunities for teens to gain valuable work experience during seasonal events such as ‘Winter Lights’ and ‘Summer on the Square’ music and movie series, as well as potential partnerships for catering with the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. Graduates who work in these programs receive a stipend, ensuring their efforts are recognized and valued. Most businesses hire people 16 and over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get prepared with experience!

High schoolers are our target population for the Work Ready Program, since those 14 years of age and older are eligible to obtain a work permit and immediately put their skills to use. This program equips teens with the skills and confidence necessary for a successful transition into adulthood, fostering improved academic performance, community engagement, and long-term career success.
